• How about Shima Onsen in Gunma? It is relatively easy to access from Tokyo, with express buses and other services available. There is a private open-air bath, but the open-air bath in the large communal bath is also large and comfortable. I don't know if it's still there, but the "hospitality" is wonderful, with landlady telling a story in a picture storytelling show after dinner and the staff showing off their skills. There is also a "drinking spring" where you can taste the source water of Shima Onsen. There is everything in Ryokan (Japanese inn), from karaoke to ramen shops, so there is no need to go out. It is worth staying there at least once. If you are going by car, it is good to go to Minakami on the day after your stay, or it is also fun to go to Kusatsu.
