  • The scenery of Oku-Kumano is beautiful

  • Ryokan (Japanese inn) is easily accessible from the Kumano Kodo trail, a registered World Heritage Site, and has a recommended hot spring. We were able to relax in the hotel and rooms, surrounded by mountains, rivers, and abundant nature. The open-air bath by the riverbank, with its open feel, will help you refresh after your travels.

  • You can eat dishes made with hot spring water

  • The Kumano Kodo trail is easily accessible, and it is also a 5-minute drive from the inn to easily access Hongu Taisha Shrine. Ryokan (Japanese inn) is surrounded by nature and a World Heritage Site, and has an open-air bath on the riverbank. The facilities are a little old, like an old Japanese Ryokan (Japanese inn), but it was clean and comfortable. Surrounded by the trees of the mountains and the river, you can enjoy the great outdoors. For dinner, kaiseki(a traditional Japanese multiple course meal ). In the morning, we had a Japanese and Western Buffet, and the hot tofu, egg dishes, and porridge made with hot spring water were delicious.

  • Ryokan (Japanese inn) with delicious food near Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine

  • Ryokan (Japanese inn) is located on the riverside, and has an open-air bath on the riverbank. There are also rooms with open-air baths. It was conveniently located near Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine. The grilled salted sweetfish we had for dinner was very delicious, and the breakfast Buffet also had rice porridge made with hot spring water, which was unusual and a bit strange, but delicious. The building is old, but well-cleaned, and we had a comfortable stay.

  • In winter, you can enjoy an open-air bath in the natural hot springs on the riverbank.

  • Ryokan (Japanese inn) is located on the banks of the Ooto River in Wakayama Prefecture. It is located near the end of the Kumano Kodo trail. On days with good weather between December and February, you can bathe in the riverbed where natural hot springs are gushing forth. It's a little embarrassing, but the rustic open-air bath gave me a sense of freedom and a sense of hidden hot springs. I was also able to enjoy the view of the river flowing in front of me while relaxing in the large communal bath and the open-air bath. The view of the nature of Oku-Kumano from my room was soothing.

  • There is a natural hot spring that springs from the riverbank.

  • It is a 10-minute drive from Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine (World Heritage Site). Kawayu Onsen is famous for its winter Sennin-buro bath, but you can also take a bath in Kawayu in the fall. The breeze was cool and refreshing, and the indoor bath was clean and comfortable. In the fall, there is also a spot for viewing autumn leaves called Oto Valley, which is a 20-minute drive away. The Japanese-style room was 10 tatami mats and was comfortable. At the time, it was on sale and cost about 30,000 yen for two people with two meals included.

  • An inn located near the end of the Kumano Kodo trail

  • The open-air bath on the riverbank had a very open feeling and the water was great. I felt relaxed as I could see the river surface from my room. I was able to wash away my fatigue near the end of the Kumano Kodo trail. It is close to Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine. I remember being happy to be able to stay at this hotel as a reward for walking the Kumano Kodo trail.

Watarase Onsen Hotel Sasayuri

45-1 Hongucho, Wataze, Tanabe-shi

  • There is a large open-air bath where you can enjoy the magnificent nature.

  • You can enjoy one of the largest open-air baths in Japan, as well as a private bath. You can relax and soothe your tired body after a walk along the Kumano Kodo trail. For access, there is a free shuttle bus from Shirahama Station. The meals are mainly Japanese cuisine using local seasonal ingredients, making them healthy and delicious.

  • There is a large open-air bath and a wide selection of Japanese cuisine.

  • If you want to use it as a base for the Kumano Kodo trail, how about Hotel Sasayuri in Watarase Onsen, which has a large open-air bath? The rooms and baths are spacious, so you can relax and unwind. The food is Japanese, with plenty of dishes made with seasonal ingredients from the mountains and the sea. The breakfast was also delicious, with so many dishes that I couldn't finish it all.

  • A lodging with convenient access to the Kumano Kodo trail.

  • There is a shuttle bus from JR Shirahama Station, so it is also convenient to access by train. The rooms are generally spacious and well-furnished, making it perfect for large groups. The hot spring is a free-flowing natural hot spring, and there is also a private open-air bath. The hotel is surrounded by the Kii Mountains, so you can enjoy nature while bathing. The food is made with local ingredients, such as Kumano beef. In the lounge, you can enjoy coffee brewed in the hot spring water, making this an inn that pays attention to even the smallest details. The hotel is also close to Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine, making it a great place for sightseeing along the Kumano Kodo trail.

Kawayu Onsen Fujiya Ryokan

1452, Kawayu, Hongu-cho, Tanabe

  • You can experience an open-air bath on the riverbank

  • I stayed here while walking the Kumano Kodo trail. Both the open-air bath in the room and the open-air bath by the river were charming and wonderful. The open-air bath by the river in particular offers a sense of comfort and luxury that can only be experienced here. Outside of winter, you can rent a bathing suit and a shovel and dig your own riverside open-air bath.

  • A historic and relaxing inn

  • A few years ago, married couple and I stayed at Fujiya in Kawayu Onsen when we walked the Kumano Kodo trail. The room with the open-air bath was very spacious and modern, and we were able to stay comfortably. I think the price was less than 30,000 yen per person. We also appreciated the shuttle service to the Kumano Kodo trails such as Hosshinmon Oji every morning.

Ryokan Adumaya

Hongucho Yunomine 122

  • A charming inn that lets you feel history

  • This is an inn in Yunomine Onsen, which is said to be the oldest hot spring in Japan. The noble presence of the inn makes you feel its history. The cypress bath was very comfortable and helped me to relax after a long day. There is a steam bath that you might want to call the original sauna, a rare experience that is only found in a few places in Japan. The food was also delicious and very satisfying. It was very quiet at night, and I was able to sleep well.

Irukaspa Hotel Seiryuso

158, Kiwacho Kogawaguchi

  • You can visit the Kumano Kodo trail and Kiwa-cho in Kumano City.

  • I recommend Iruka Onsen in Kumano City, Mie Prefecture. We stopped here on the way to Hongu-michi, one of the Kumano Kodo trails. The large public bath was spacious, and the view of the Kitayama River from the open-air bath was Breathtaking view. There was also a sauna and a cold bath, so it was well-equipped. There were only mountains and rivers in the surrounding area, so it was very quiet and I was able to relax in the nature. The Japanese-style room was spacious and relaxing. The food was made with ingredients from Mie, and dinner was kaiseki(a traditional Japanese multiple course meal )allowed you to enjoy the colors of the season, so I was able to enjoy a luxury that I don't usually get to experience. The Japanese set meal for breakfast was also delicious and plentiful. The self-service coffee was also good.

Kirinosato Takahara

Wakayama, Tanabe, Takahara Nakaheji 826 , Japan

  • A stylish inn along an old road

  • It is a small inn with 8 rooms along the Kumano Kodo trail. However, it has both Japanese-style and Western-style rooms, each with a luxurious interior and construction that is not inferior to a large hotel. It is like a private lodging version of a designer hotel. There is also an open-air bath, which is perfect for relaxing your body after climbing up and down the stairs. It is said that it uses natural hot spring water. You can feel the breath of Kumano very comfortably.
