  • Yuzawa Grand Hotel
  • Please tell us about some famous hot springs or hot spring inns that only a few people know about, or "a place that everyone should stay at in Japan at least once."

Please tell us about a hot spring Ryokan (Japanese inn) that makes you feel like "this is the Japanese hot spring inn" or "this is the Japanese hospitality." I would be grateful if you could tell me the reason why you feel that way and any episodes you had.

Yuzawa Grand Hotel

2494 Yuzawa, Yuzawa-machi, Minami Uonuma-gun Niigata

  • The baths of two concepts are fused together.

  • The traditional indoor and outdoor baths are simple and have a "wabi-sabi" feel. The newer baths are modern and have a luxurious feel. The staff are all polite, and you can enjoy the sense of security that comes with being at a long-established hotel. Another thing worth mentioning is the substantial breakfast. I think this is a great hotel where you can enjoy everything from check-in to check-out.

Oyado Noshiyu Onsen Ryokan

Kurokawaonsen, minamioguni-cyo,Aso-gun

  • A hot spring inn in Kumamoto that I have visited many times

  • I recommend this inn in Kurokawa Onsen, Kumamoto Prefecture. The hot springs are full of atmosphere, with an open-air bath surrounded by trees and a rare private bath called "standing bath" where you can enjoy bathing while standing. There are also rooms with hot springs. And our favorite thing is the food. The creative dishes using Kyushu ingredients such as Kumamoto's specialty horse sashimi and Akagyu beef are elaborate, and make us want to come back again in a different season. If anything, I think it is more suitable for adult families than for children.

Kitayuzawa Mori no Soraniwa

300-7 Kitayuzawa Onsen-cho, Otaki-ku, Date-shi

  • The open-air bath in the cool morning air is the best

  • We recommend Mori no Soraniwa, a hot spring inn where you can soak in the Kita-Yuzawa hot springs of Hokkaido. On a late autumn morning when the leaves are turning red and the outside temperature is in the single digits, the open-air bath is enveloped in a thick veil of steam, and you can only see other bathers for a short time if the wind blows. You will find yourself in your own world, and you can experience a truly fantastical atmosphere.

Myojinkan Ryokan

8967 Iriyamabe

  • A lodging where you can fully enjoy Nature of Nagano

  • How about this hot spring Ryokan (Japanese inn) in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture? Myojinkan in Tobira Onsen is a detached house nestled at the foot of Mt. Utsukushigahara, and has a wonderful open-air bath that exudes a hidden hot spring atmosphere. You can also take Lying-down bath (a bath in which you lie down with your head on a wooden pillow) or a standing bath that makes you feel one with nature. You can also stroll around the area of Ryokan (Japanese inn) freely, and it is a soothing inn where you can forget the hustle and bustle of the city and refresh both body and mind. Of course, the meals are made with plenty of seasonal ingredients, so you can enjoy a luxurious feeling.

Tsuta Onsen Ryokan

Okuse Aza Tsutanoyu 1

  • An old hot spring inn beloved by literary figures

  • How about Aomori Prefecture? The only hot spring inn in Tsuta Onsen, located on Mount Hakkoda, is the "Tsuta Onsen Ryokan (Japanese inn)." It is an inn that the writer Omachi Keigetsu loved so much that he made it his final home. It is surrounded by nature, including Tsuta Numa, and if you go a little further, you will find the Oirase Gorge and Lake Towada. I would recommend it in all seasons, but it is especially beautiful during the autumn leaves.

Arima Onsen Nakanobo Zuien

808 Arima-cho, Kita-ku

  • A quiet and relaxing luxury hot hot spring inn

  • Arima Onsen is said to be the oldest hot spring in Japan, mentioned even in the Manyo period. Among them, this inn is particularly high-class. The greeting at the entrance, the scent of incense in the lobby, the well-maintained courtyard, the carp in the pond, the delicious matcha, everything is a wonderful hospitality that can be called "omotenashi". The open-air bath "Kinsen" allows you to fully enjoy Arima Onsen. You can also feel the chef's heart in the meals.

CHAHARU Hanare Dogo Yumekura

Dogoyuzki-cho 4-5

  • I recommend Dogo Onsen hot spring hot springs.

  • How about this Ryokan (Japanese inn) at Douraku Onsen? This inn places importance on experiencing Ehime, which places importance on local production and consumption. The food is made with carefully selected local ingredients. You can fully enjoy Ehime, such as Imabari towels, Tobe ware, Iyo kasuri, Kikuma tiles, and Uchiko washi paper. The large public bath is available at the neighboring inn, Chaharu. Each room also has an indoor bath, and the bathtub design is different and stylish.

Osawa Onsen Sansuikaku

181 Osawa, Yuguchi, Hanamaki-shi

  • hot spring inn in Iwate with beautiful autumn foliage

  • From your room you can enjoy the seasonal scenery along the mountain stream. The autumn leaves are especially beautiful. You can enjoy the hot springs not only at Sansuikaku, but also at the baths in the adjacent self-catering area and Kikusuikan, so you can fully enjoy the hot springs. The view from the Osawa no Yu (open-air bath) in the self-catering area is Breathtaking view. Dinner is a carefully prepared kaiseki meal, and the breakfast Buffet is also delicious! The service is also very polite, making it a comfortable inn. If you have the opportunity to visit Iwate in the Tohoku region, I recommend Osawa Onsen in Hanamaki Onsen.

Taikanso Senami no Yu

2-10-24 Senami Onsen, Murakami-shi

  • A wonderful hotel facing the Sea of Japan

  • The inn faces the Sea of Japan, overlooking Sado Island and Awashima Island in the distance, and the scenery is amazing. I recommend Senami Onsen in Niigata. The view of the sunset from the room is so amazing it's hard to put into words. You can also see the Sea of Japan from the large public bath, and enjoy the sunset and sunrise. Senami Onsen Beach and Sasagawa Nagare are nearby, so be sure to check them out.

Atami Korakuen Hotel

Wadahamaminami-cho10-1

  • A hot hot spring inn in Atami with ocean views

  • If you're visiting Atami Onsen, we recommend this hotel. The bath is very spacious and relaxing. The view of the ocean and the nightscape is also beautiful. Meals are served buffet style and Japanese-style kaiseki cuisine, and the food made with seasonal ingredients from Izu is very delicious. There are Japanese-style rooms and Western-style rooms from which you can see the ocean, and the rooms are clean. This is a recommended hotel for families traveling to Atami, including those with children.

Shima Yamaguchikan

Shima 3876-1

  • The large open-air bath bath is comfortable

  • How about Shima Onsen in Gunma? It is relatively easy to access from Tokyo, with express buses and other services. There is a private open-air bath, but the open-air bath in the large communal bath is also large and comfortable. I don't know if it's still there, but the "hospitality" is wonderful, with landlady telling a story in a picture storytelling show after dinner and the staff showing off their skills. There is also a "drinking spring" where you can taste the source water of Shima Onsen. There is everything in Ryokan (Japanese inn), from karaoke to ramen shops, so there is no need to go out. It is worth staying there at least once. If you are going by car, it is good to go to Minakami the day after your stay, or it is also fun to go to Kusatsu.
