  • Asakusa View Hotel
  • Looking for foreigner-friendly hotels in Tokyo's Shitamachi area?

Two of my American friends (both women) are visiting Japan this summer. They're really interested in exploring the 'Shitamachi' (old downtown) area of Tokyo. Could you recommend any hotels or accommodations in that area that are safe and welcoming for foreigners, especially for female travelers?

Asakusa View Hotel

3-17-1 Nishi-Asakusa Taito-ku

  • A Great, Secure Hotel for First-Time Visitors to Asakusa

  • I'd recommend the Asakusa View Hotel. It's a very reliable and safe choice. It's one of the largest hotels in the Asakusa area, and the front desk is staffed 24/7. The security is also excellent, so it's a worry-free option, even for solo female travelers or women traveling together. Their breakfast buffet is extremely popular! You get a fantastic view, and they offer a great selection of both Japanese and Western dishes. It's also really convenient because you can grab a meal or have tea right in the hotel, which is perfect for when you're tired from walking around. It makes the hotel stay itself enjoyable. Plus, the staff is very experienced with international guests. If you run into any issues, I'm sure they'll be happy to help you out.

  • A Tall Hotel with Direct Station Access – Safe for Late Nights

  • If safety and a welcoming atmosphere are your priorities, the Asakusa View Hotel is a top recommendation. The hotel is directly connected to the "Tsukuba Express" Asakusa Station. This means that even if you return late at night, you can get straight into the hotel without walking outside, which is extremely safe. Plus, it’s one of the tallest buildings in the neighborhood, offering outstanding views from the guest rooms and restaurants. Getting to see the shitamachi (traditional downtown) cityscape and the Skytree together is a unique experience you can only get here. As it's a large, major hotel, the security is very reliable as well.

  • The Perfect Hotel Base for Exploring Asakusa!

  • If you're interested in the shitamachi (traditional downtown) area, the Asakusa View Hotel is a really great choice! It's a well-established and famous hotel in Asakusa, and the staff are very experienced with international tourists, so you'll feel right at home. I especially recommend the view from the rooms! Getting a room where you can see Tokyo Skytree and the illuminated Senso-ji Temple right in front of you is absolutely stunning. It's also just a short walk from famous spots like Senso-ji Temple and "Hoppy Dori" (Hoppy Street), making it the perfect base for exploring the downtown area.

  • A convenient and safe hotel

  • There may be many other hotels that are just cheap, but the reason we recommend this hotel is that the staff at reception desk are friendly and you can use it with peace of mind, the rooms are spacious and comfortable, and the facilities are well-equipped. If you let the staff know that you will be a foreigner visiting when making a reservation, the staff will surely be able to assist you properly.

  • Asakusa hotels recommended for foreigners

  • I recommended the Asakusa View Hotel to an acquaintance from Canada when he came to Japan. He was very pleased. He was impressed not only by the excellent hospitality, but also by the beautiful, clear view with no tall buildings around. The rooms are spacious, so even if you're big, you won't feel cramped. This is a recommended hotel near Asakusa.

Sakura Hostel Asakusa

2-24-2 Asakusa Taito-ku,

  • Charming Hostel with a Friendly, English-Speaking Vibe

  • I think you'll really love Sakura Hostel Asakusa! It’s less of a formal "hotel" and much more of a casual, international "hostel." The staff and guests are from all over the world, and it feels like English is the common language, so your friend should be able to relax right away. The lobby and shared kitchen are great social hubs where you can meet other travelers and trade tips. Of course, the staff are also experts on all the best local sightseeing spots in Asakusa. It’s kept very clean and you’ll see a lot of female travelers there, so I can definitely recommend it as a safe choice, too.

  • Feel Safe and Secure with a Women-Only Floor

  • How about Sakura Hostel Asakusa? It's a famous hostel in Asakusa where travelers gather from all over the world. The staff are fluent in English and very experienced with international guests, so they're extremely welcoming. I know safety is a concern, especially for two women traveling together, but you don't need to worry. They have a women-only dormitory floor, so it's very secure. It's also just a short walk to Senso-ji Temple and the Hanayashiki Amusement Park. It's the perfect base for exploring the shitamachi (traditional downtown) area!

  • A casual, comfortable hotel with great hospitality

  • This is a cheap lodging for backpackers coming to Japan from all over the world. Staff who are used to dealing with foreigners are always on hand and will assist you even if you need to stay overnight at short notice. There are discounts for long-term stays, and you can choose between private rooms and dormitory-style rooms. Computers and Wi-Fi are also available. If you enjoy meeting and chatting with other tourists, you're sure to have a great time.

Andon Ryokan

Taito-ku Nihonzutsumi 2-34-10

  • A Charming Design Ryokan with an Artistic Vibe and Welcoming Staff

  • For a unique stay, I'd suggest Andon Ryokan in the Minowa area. It's an incredibly stylish design ryokan, beautifully renovated from an older building. The interior is decorated with antique furniture and art, making it feel just like a small private museum. Unlike large, impersonal hotels, its real charm is the very at-home (cozy and welcoming) atmosphere. The staff speak excellent English and are very experienced with international guests, so your friend should feel comfortable immediately. I've also heard that they get a lot of female travelers staying there, so I can confidently recommend it as a safe choice. It's perfect if you're looking for a quiet, artistic stay in the shitamachi (traditional downtown) area.

  • Ryokan (Japanese inn) with the concept of showcasing the beauty of Japan

  • It's a beautiful inn that even Japanese people will find relaxing and want to stay at. The rooms are Japanese-style with futons, are clean, and come equipped with yukata robes and bath towels. The bathroom walls are a mysterious space with illustrations by a designer painted all over them. Various Japanese antiques are on display inside the building, and the information boards are written in English so that foreigners can easily understand. The staff can speak English fluently, so you can rest assured.

  • A stylish Ryokan (Japanese inn) in the downtown area

  • A 5-minute walk from Exit 3 of Minowa Station on the Hibiya Line. A 15-minute walk from JR Minamisenju Station, this is a traditional Japanese Ryokan (Japanese inn). With reasonable prices and foreign language signage, even foreigners can stay here without worry. There is also a plan that includes a Japanese breakfast, so you can feel at home in Japan.

HOTEL MYSTAYS Asakusa-bashi

1-5-5, Asakusabashi, Taito-ku

  • The hotel also offers bicycle rentals.

  • For example, in the Asakusa area, this cheap hotel is recommended as it is close to the station. It is close to the station and there are many people passing by, so it is safe. Some cheap hotels in "shitamachi" areas are located in dimly lit areas far from the station, but this one is safe. The interior is a stylish business hotel. They also offer bicycle rentals, so it might be nice to go around the downtown area by bicycle.

Hotel Niwa Tokyo

1-1-16 Kanda Misaki-cho, Chiyoda-ku

  • A conveniently located inn popular with foreigners

  • It was located in a quiet area about 5 minutes from Suidobashi Station. It is popular with foreigners and has many foreign guests. It is a Japanese modern style hotel, and there is a small garden in front of the hotel that foreigners enjoy. There were enough reception desk staff, and the service was attentive, so I was able to spend a good time.

Kaminarimon Ryokan

Taito-ku, Asakusa 1-18-2

  • Ryokan (Japanese inn) located very close to Asakusa Kaminarimon Gate

  • This is a homely Ryokan (Japanese inn) located very close to Asakusa Kaminarimon, which is full of Tokyo's old town atmosphere. Due to its location, we have many guests from overseas, so you won't be surprised by the hospitality. The large bath is also popular with overseas guests. Bicycles are available for rental, so you can enjoy sightseeing even more.

Guesthouse toco

Taito-ku Sitaya 2-13-21

  • I also recommend the guesthouse.

  • Why not try the guesthouse? This inn is an old house that has been renovated into a guesthouse. The long garden with its veranda and stepping stones exudes a nostalgic Showa-era atmosphere. You can also chat in the living bar. The place is right next to Tokyo Metro Iriya Station.

YAMAZAKI BAKING CORPORATE PENSION FUND HOUSE

  • Hotel is a 2-minute walk from Ichikawa Station on the JR Sobu Line

  • Shibamata, Katsushika Ward, is located in the downtown area of Tokyo. This hotel is in Chiba Prefecture, but is very close to Shibamata, and you can get to Shibamata by crossing the river. There is a bronze statue of Tora-san at Shibamata Station, and a shopping street where you can feel the atmosphere of the downtown area. Security is high, so even female guests can stay here with peace of mind. A twin room with breakfast is relatively reasonably priced even for one person.
