  • Kusatsu Onsen Boun
  • Kusatsu Onsen Recommendations for a Solo Male Traveler?

I'm planning a trip to Kusatsu Onsen next month because I really want to experience a Japanese onsen. I'll be traveling solo (male) and am looking for recommendations on where to stay. I would really appreciate it if I could find a hotel or ryokan that is quiet and not too crowded.

Kusatsu Onsen Boun

433-1, Agatsuma-gun

  • Two Rare Spring Sources and a Classic, Serene Atmosphere

  •  If you're looking for a quiet place to stay in Kusatsu Onsen, I highly recommend Boun. It's a 'shinise,' a long-established ryokan (traditional inn) with a rich history, so it has a wonderfully calm and sophisticated atmosphere. It's not loud or chaotic at all; it's the perfect place to truly appreciate some quiet, 'adult' time alone. But the main highlight, without a doubt, is the onsen (hot springs). They have baths drawing from two different spring sources, "Sai no Kawara" and "Bandai-ko," which is actually quite rare, even for Kusatsu. With six different baths right in the ryokan, you can enjoy 'yu-meguri' (onsen hopping) without ever leaving the building. The outdoor bath (rotenburo) is especially tranquil. It's the perfect spot to just relax and gather your thoughts in peace.

  • Relax and unwind with a single plan

  • This hotel offers a single room plan with 12 tatami mats, so you can relax in a spacious room. For dinner, you can enjoy Wagyu beef Shabu Shabu(Japanese hotpot). The hot spring is 100% natural hot spring, so it's the best.

  • Single occupancy plans are available.

  • It's close to the Yubatake and within walking distance, and they offer a plan for single guests. The service was polite and excellent, the food was delicious, and there was so much to choose from that I couldn't finish it all. I was very satisfied. The room was spacious, and the garden was very tasteful and beautiful.

  • With the solo travel plan, you can have dinner and breakfast in your room.

  • Boun is a long-established inn that was founded in 1599, and is easily accessible, just a five-minute walk from the Yubatake. They offer a plan for solo travelers, and both dinner and breakfast can be served in your room, so we recommend it. There are six baths in the inn, including indoor and outdoor baths, all of which are charming wooden buildings, and you can enjoy two types of 100% natural hot spring onsen(hot spring) directly from the source. The inn and rooms have a calm and quiet atmosphere, making it the perfect inn for adults to spend their holidays.

Kusatsu Hotel

479 Kusatsu-machi, Agatsuma-gun

  • A Classic Hotel Steeped in 100 Years of History

  • As its name "Kusatsu Hotel" suggests, it's one of the classic, historic hotels that truly represents the town. Its most notable feature is the historic wooden building, constructed over 100 years ago (around 1913). This style is called "Taisho Roman," a traditional early 20th-century Japanese design, which gives the entire interior a very classic and serene atmosphere. Unlike the newer, modern hotels, there's absolutely no noisy or chaotic feeling here. For a solo male traveler (like myself), quietly reading a book or soaking in the onsen within this timeless building is the ultimate luxury. I think it's perfectly suited for those who appreciate a quiet, uncrowded atmosphere.

  • A Peaceful Retreat in Nature, Just Outside the Town Center

  • If you're a solo traveler looking for a quiet place, "Kusatsu Hotel" is a great option. It’s about a 10-minute walk from the "Yubatake," which is the center of Kusatsu Onsen. Because it's set back a bit, it’s in an incredibly quiet and appealing location. It's also right next to "Sai no Kawara Park," a large park where hot spring water flows freely through it. Unlike the crowded town center, this area is full of nature and has a really relaxed vibe. It’s the perfect spot for anyone who wants to just chill out on their own—whether that means taking a morning walk in the park or just soaking quietly in the onsen.

  • There is a large public bath where you can experience the difference in the hot spring water.

  • It is a three-story wooden hot spring Ryokan (Japanese inn). The long, narrow hot spring is divided into two, so you can easily experience the difference between the Nishinokawahara hot spring and the Bandai hot spring. The meal is a kaiseki meal with 11 different dishes. The wild vegetable urui and apple with white sesame sauce, bluefin tuna sashimi, and grilled abalone were all delicious.

Kusatsu Onsen Kanemidori

  • Enjoy Rare, Direct-Source Onsen—Right by the Yubatake

  • If you're looking for a quiet stay in Kusatsu Onsen, "Kanamidori" is a fantastic choice. It's a traditional Japanese ryokan located right in front of the "Yubatake," the main landmark of the town. The biggest selling point here is the sheer "quality" of its onsen water. It is one of the very few ryokans in Kusatsu where you can experience two different types of spring water, both flowing 100% gensen kakenagashi. This means the water flows directly from the source into the baths, completely fresh and untreated. Even though it’s right in the center and convenient for sightseeing, the interior is pure 'Jun-Wafu' (traditional Japanese style) and remains remarkably quiet. The main bath area is also very tranquil. If you're the type of person who wants to be alone to quietly contemplate and truly appreciate the famous waters, this environment is ideal.

  • The Perfect Balance: Prime Location and Timeless Serenity

  • For a solo trip to Kusatsu Onsen, I highly recommend "Kanamidori." It offers an excellent balance of perfect accessibility and tranquility. It's located less than a 1-minute walk from the "Yubatake," the symbol of Kusatsu Onsen. You might assume that being in the center of the onsen town means it's noisy, but "Kanamidori" is a historic, long-established ryokan (a 'shinise'). The moment you step inside, the hustle and bustle of the tourist area outside simply melts away, revealing a serene and traditional Japanese space. The entire hotel maintains this peaceful atmosphere, making it ideal for those who want to spend their time quietly alone. It's incredibly convenient for sightseeing, and you can easily return to the ryokan to rest whenever you feel tired.

  • This hotel has lovely rooms with carefully selected furniture and materials.

  • The guest rooms at Kin Midori are unified in a modern Japanese style, and each room is a wonderful inn with carefully selected furniture and materials. There are large public baths and open-air baths for men and women, and a private open-air bath in a independent guest cottages building. You can enjoy the "Yubata source" in the large public bath, and the "Bandaiko source" in the open-air bath. Both are free-flowing hot springs. The private open-air baths include a "Wooden bath" and a "Stone bath," and are relaxing open-air baths with a view of the garden. Meals are deliciously prepared by a skilled head chef using locally sourced ingredients. The hideaway-style private rooms are also in an excellent location.

KAMENOI HOTEL Kusatsu Resort

15-8 Kusatsu-cho Agatsumagun

  • It's a little old, but it's a nice place to stay.

  • All the hot springs in Kusatsu 100% natural hot spring are directly sourced, and the quality of the springs at this hotel was excellent. The building is a little old, but I recommend it for people who don't mind the age of the building and want a cheap place to stay. When I stayed there, dinner kaiseki(a traditional Japanese multiple course meal ), and breakfast was Buffet. The breakfast included yogurt from areas close to Kusatsu.
