Seeking a Foreigner-Friendly, Traditional Japanese Onsen Ryokan near Kanto with English Support! (Under ¥20,000 per person per night)
Hi everyone! I'm looking for recommendations for an onsen ryokan for a foreign couple visiting the Kanto region of Japan in August. Ideally, the hotel would have a traditional Japanese atmosphere and service, offer English support, and have a budget of under ¥20,000 per person per night. Any suggestions?

- This is a prestigious, traditional Japanese-style hotel that truly embodies a sense of heritage, even for Japanese guests, so I'm confident foreign visitors will absolutely adore it. What truly stands out at this hotel is the incredible hot springs; the open-air bath, in particular, is simply superb and offers a wonderfully relaxing experience!
The hotel's location in Hakone is also excellent. It's a fantastic spot that's easily accessible. You can reach it effortlessly from central Tokyo by taking the "Romancecar" limited express train. This is perfect if you prefer not to drive, as the Romancecar offers comfortable, reserved seating, making for a super convenient and stress-free journey right to Hakone-Yumoto Station.ユーザー's answer (Posted on:2014/6/ 3)

Nikko is a popular area around Kanto for foreign visitors, and while Nikko Kanaya Hotel is closer to the nearest station, if you're looking for an onsen (hot spring) experience, Chuzenji Kanaya Hotel is definitely the way to go. They even offer a free shuttle bus from Tobu Nikko Station, so access is a breeze. The onsen boasts an open-air bath with absolutely stunning views, making it a truly picturesque experience. As part of the famous Kanaya Hotel group, you can expect to experience the quintessential Japanese "Omotenashi" – unparalleled hospitality. ユーザー's answer (Posted on:2014/6/ 3)

Indulge in a Variety of Relaxing Hot Spring Baths!
- The surrounding scenery at Asaya Hotel is absolutely breathtaking, and the hot spring facilities are incredibly diverse and well-equipped. The rooftop open-air bath, offering magnificent views of nature, is particularly recommended – it's an unforgettable experience. The large communal baths are also sure to satisfy. During the autumn foliage season, reservations can be incredibly difficult to secure, so it's a good idea to book well in advance if you plan to visit then. You'll also be very pleased with the meals! たけし32's answer (Posted on:2014/6/ 3)

A stylish hotel with an old-fashioned Meiji-era exterior and Matsumoto furniture
- The hotel has a Western-style exterior, but with a Japanese feel, such as the lobby filled with historic Matsumoto furniture and the large wooden washbasin in the bathroom. The hotel is surrounded by streets that still retain the atmosphere of the Meiji era, with Matsumoto Castle just a five-minute walk from the hotel and Kaichi School, which opened in the Meiji era, just beyond that, giving the hotel an atmosphere reminiscent of Japan's old days. A short walk away is the newer shopping street, where you can enjoy the old and new townscapes.ユーザー's answer (Posted on:2014/6/ 3)

Indulge in Retro Charm with Breathtaking Ocean Views and Hot Springs!
-
While boasting a charming retro exterior from the Showa era, Hotel New Akao is incredibly sophisticated, with a serene and refined interior. You can soak in the hot springs while enjoying panoramic views of the clear blue sky and ocean. Perched dramatically on a cliff facing the sea, every room offers stunning ocean views, and you can even witness the sunrise over the ocean in the mornings. The recommended hot spring is the hinoki (cypress wood) indoor bath, which also provides sweeping sea views. The cuisine is also absolutely delicious! Nearby, you'll find Atami Castle (a popular tourist observation facility, not an original historical castle), Atami Plum Garden, and the hotel's own direct herb garden, all of which are sure to delight foreign visitors. 過去から抜け出せない人間's answer (Posted on:2014/6/ 3)

A Homely and Authentic Ryokan with a Foreign Owner Who Speaks English!
- This charming, rustic ryokan is owned by a foreign "Wakadan'na" (young master/owner) who loves hot springs, so you can expect excellent English communication! Their official website is also fully available in English, making booking and information gathering very easy. The guest rooms are all traditional Japanese-style (I believe all rooms are Japanese-style) and offer lovely views of a Japanese garden-like courtyard from both the rooms and the open-air baths, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in Japanese culture. The hot springs are 24-hour free-flowing, and the meals feature an abundance of local Shinshu ingredients like wild vegetables and simmered dishes. The couple's homely and warm service creates a wonderfully comfortable and nostalgic atmosphere at this ryokan. ユーザー's answer (Posted on:2014/6/ 3)

An Onsen Ryokan Right in Front of Gora Station!
- This hotel is super convenient for travelers arriving by train as it's located directly in front of Gora Station. In fact, it's highly recommended to go by train, as driving can often lead to traffic congestion in the area! While the front desk and common areas have a Western-style hotel design, the guest rooms are traditional Japanese-style, allowing you to enjoy the authentic atmosphere of a Japanese onsen ryokan, complete with open-air baths. They also have an English website, and judging by reviews, there are staff members who can speak English. I even saw foreign guests during my stay. You should be able to stay for under ¥25,000 per person if you avoid the Obon holiday period in August. otohime's answer (Posted on:2014/6/ 3)

Enjoy Breathtaking Infinity Onsen Views and French-Kaiseki Cuisine!
- I stayed here with a friend previously, and it was a fantastic experience. While relatively close to Tokyo, the entire town exudes the atmosphere of a traditional hot spring resort, allowing you to truly feel the charm of old Japan. The highlight is undoubtedly the open-air "infinity" onsen, which feels as if it extends seamlessly into the ocean – it's absolutely magnificent! The cuisine is French-Kaiseki, a blend of French and traditional Japanese multi-course dining, which I believe is very approachable and enjoyable for foreign guests. mr's answer (Posted on:2014/6/ 3)
