Yumoto Fujiya Hotel

256-1 Yumoto Hakone-machi, Ashigarashimo-gun

  • A Historic Ryokan with Superb Onsen and Cuisine

  • When I visit Hakone, I often stay at Yumoto Fujiya Hotel. As a long-established ryokan, the staff's service is outstanding. The French, Japanese, and Chinese cuisine served in their restaurants is not only visually stunning but also incredibly delicious – I highly recommend it. They've long welcomed international guests, just like Fujiya Hotel in Miyanoshita, so it's a relief to know they have English-speaking staff. Day-trip onsen use is also available.

What truly stands out at this hotel is the incredible hot springs; the open-air bath, in particular, is simply superb and offers a wonderfully relaxing experience! The hotel's location in Hakone is also excellent. It's a fantastic spot that's easily accessible. You can reach it effortlessly from central Tokyo by taking the "Romancecar" limited express train. This is perfect if you prefer not to drive, as the Romancecar offers comfortable, reserved seating, making for a super convenient and stress-free journey right to Hakone-Yumoto Station.

The rooftop open-air bath, offering magnificent views of nature, is particularly recommended – it's an unforgettable experience. The large communal baths are also sure to satisfy. Shima Onsen Kashiwaya Ryokan

3829 Shima Nakanojo-machi Agatsuma-gun

  • A Hidden Gem Hot Spring Inn in Shima Onsen, Gunma Prefecture

  • Let me introduce you to a hidden gem hot spring inn: Kashiwaya Ryokan in Shima Onsen, Gunma Prefecture. Shima Onsen boasts wonderful spring water quality, but it's often overshadowed by the more famous Kusatsu Onsen. The building features a distinctive Japanese modern atmosphere, and its cozy 14 rooms even have "black telephones," which are quite rare now, allowing you to experience the nostalgic ambiance of an old-fashioned Japanese toji (hot spring cure). While it may not offer complete English support, they actively welcome international guests, so the staff are likely accustomed to assisting foreign visitors.

The guest rooms are all traditional Japanese-style (I believe all rooms are Japanese-style) and offer lovely views of a Japanese garden-like courtyard from both the rooms and the open-air baths, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in Japanese culture. The hot springs are 24-hour free-flowing, and the meals feature an abundance of local Shinshu ingredients like wild vegetables and simmered dishes.
