Where is the best accommodation in Kansai to experience Shukubo?
I would like to visit a temple and experience Shukubo during the season when the autumn foliage is beautiful. Are there any beginner-friendly Shukubo that offer experiences like morning services and zazen meditation, and serve Shojin Ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine)?
15Hotel rankings chosen by people
- Conveniently located inside Chion-in Temple! Unlike other Shukubo that serve Shojin Ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine), this place offers Kaiseki cuisine, which includes fish and meat on the menu. You can still participate in sutra copying and morning services. There is a clean large public bath, and it’s essentially a hotel run by a temple.アリス's answer (Posted on:2018/11/ 5)

Experience sutra copying and enjoy delicious Shojin Ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine)
- I stayed here quite a while ago, did sutra copying, and enjoyed Shojin Ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine). It was a great experience. There seem to be a lot of different plans available now. It's more like a hotel than a temple. There’s even a TV. There’s no need to feel nervous about staying here. The monks will serve you the food.ユーザー's answer (Posted on:2014/6/ 3)

A Shukubo recommended for families and first-time visitors
- This Shukubo, a short walk from Kyoto's Sanjusangendo Temple, offers modern amenities despite its traditional classification, making it highly recommended for first-time guests. A distinctive feature of this temple is the paintings on walls and sliding doors created by Hasegawa Tohaku, commissioned by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in memory of his son, Tsurumatsu. Additionally, a monk will serve as the guide. Guests can choose between Kyoto-style Kaiseki cuisine and Shojin Ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine).ユーザー's answer (Posted on:2014/6/ 3)

A Shukubo nestled in the remote areas of Wakayama
- How about visiting Koyasan, a hidden gem in Japan? Using public transportation, it takes about 90 minutes from Namba by train, cable car, and bus. By car, it can take up to 120 minutes, even with traffic. Once you arrive in Koyasan, you'll be overwhelmed by its atmosphere. Meals consist of Shojin Ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine), and you can enjoy authentic koya-dofu (freeze-dried tofu), named after Koyasan. Although the flavors are subtle, we encourage you to savor this authentic Japanese cuisine.SUU's answer (Posted on:2016/3/11)

A Shukubo in Wakayama Prefecture that serves delicious Shojin Ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine)
- Each room is remarkably beautiful, surpassing the expectations of a temple lodging, but the guest rooms in the annex are particularly exceptional with their private cypress baths. Enjoy the convenience of complimentary Wi-Fi in every room. Feel free to join us for the morning services if your schedule allows. A healthy, low-calorie Shojin Ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine) will be served, but it tastes like dishes you'd enjoy at a high-end Japanese restaurant.ヤギヌマ's answer (Posted on:2017/9/13)

A Shukubo offering a variety of enjoyable experiences
- It’s a Shukubo in Koyasan, Wakayama Prefecture, but it offers such a wide variety of accommodation plans (which might not seem typical for a Shukubo) that it makes for an interesting place to stay. Choose from a variety of plans, including a 1-night 2-meal package with morning services and Shojin Ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine), an overnight stay with no meals where you can bring your own food, and optional activities like making prayer beads or joining a morning tour of the Danjo Garan (elevated precinct) with a monk. Although it's not cheap, the rooms do have a toilet, washbasin, and Wi-Fi, so for the price, it's reasonable. I think making prayer beads in particular will be a memorable experience!さとさと's answer (Posted on:2018/11/ 5)

Recommended for sightseeing at Enryakuji Temple in Shiga Prefecture
- This Shukubo is located in Shiga Prefecture, behind the Monjuro Gate, in a quiet location. Participation in the morning services is voluntary, but you will take part in the services at Konpon Chudo Hall. You will feel invigorated. You will be served a colorful, beautiful and delicious Shojin Ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine). The view of Lake Biwa from the large public bath is also amazing.ユーザー's answer (Posted on:2014/6/ 3)

Recommended temple lodgings at Koyasan
-
If you're looking to experience a Shukubo for the first time, we recommend Koyasan Onsen Fukuchi-in Koyasan, Wakayama Prefecture. This is a popular Shukubo at Koyasan. You can try Shojin Ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine) and freshly made soba noodles. If you begin your ascent of Mt. Koya from the base, you might be fortunate enough to receive osettai (such as complimentary tea) offered to pilgrims on their way to Mt. Koya.かがわ's answer (Posted on:2017/9/ 4)

If you're looking for a Shukubo, we recommend Koyasan!

If you want to stay at a Shukubo, the best place to stay is the head temple, Koyasan in Wakayama Prefecture. The crisp, invigorating air will soothe the soul. Among them, Jimyo-in Temple is particularly wonderful for its rooms, food, and gardens. You can escape your daily routine and refresh your mind.ユーザー's answer (Posted on:2014/6/ 3)

You can experience a luxurious Shukubo!
- Out of all the temple lodgings, I believe Fumon-in Temple to be the most luxurious. This Shukubo is located in Koyasan in Wakayama Prefecture, and guests can choose from a range of rooms, from Japanese-Western style suites with beds to simple 16.2m² Japanese-style rooms. While the price is a bit on the high side, you can experience a variety of traditional Shukubo activities such as sutra copying and enjoying Shojin Ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine). Depending on the plan, you can also have your meal served in your room. This would make a wonderful gift for parents who want to experience visiting Koyasan at least once, rather than for young people.まりるり's answer (Posted on:2018/11/ 5)

Recommended for first-time Shukubo guests.
- The Shukubo at Ninna-ji Temple in Kyoto is great for first-time visitors. It is also close to Kinkaku-ji Temple, making it a convenient location for sightseeing. The room didn't really have a Shukubo atmosphere; it felt more like a guesthouse. There is also a large public bath. The meal was a luxurious Kaiseki course that you wouldn't expect from a temple lodging, and it was delicious. I went to bed early, joined the morning service, and had the opportunity to converse with others. It was a truly enriching experience.ぽよよん's answer (Posted on:2015/12/23)
