  • Chuzenji Kanaya Hotel
  • Recommendations for a clean inn in Nikko with a free-flowing onsen?

My boyfriend and I are planning a trip to Nikko. We'd love to experience an authentic onsen and are specifically looking for a place with a gensen kakenagashi (a hot spring with free-flowing water direct from the source). We're hoping to find a reasonably priced inn or hotel. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Chuzenji Kanaya Hotel

2482 Chugushi, Nikko-city

  • A Rejuvenating Escape into Oku-Nikko's Nature and Milky Onsen

  • I highly recommend the Chuzenji Kanaya Hotel. Their onsen is a milky-white sulfur spring, with the water drawn from the Yumoto source in Oku-Nikko, a full 12 kilometers away! Soaking in the outdoor bath (rotenburo), surrounded by the serene forests of Oku-Nikko, is the ultimate way to relax. The indoor bath is wonderful too, enclosed by massive windows that let you enjoy the view in a spacious setting. It's the perfect hotel for a couple to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and truly unwind together.

Nikko Chuzenji-ko Onsen Hotel Hana-An

2480 Chugushi, Nikko

  • A Romantic Inn with Breathtaking Rotenburo Views of Lake Chuzenji

  • For a trip with your boyfriend, I think Hotel Hanan, located right on the shores of Lake Chuzenji, would be perfect. Their outdoor bath (rotenburo) is a sulfur spring with water drawn from the famous Nikko Yumoto Onsen, and of course, it’s gensen kakenagashi (100% free-flowing from the source). You can gaze out at the stunning views of Lake Chuzenji while you soak, making for an incredibly romantic experience. What’s more, every single room has a lake view, so you can enjoy the beautiful scenery from both the bath and your room. It’s an amazing experience that offers incredible value for the price.

Hotel Shikisai

Chugushi 2485

  • A Soothing, Cloudy Onsen to Relax Your Soul in Oku-Nikko's Nature

  • If you're looking for an affordable onsen inn in Nikko, I'd recommend Hotel Shikisai. Its main charm is the outdoor bath (rotenburo), completely surrounded by the vast nature of Oku-Nikko. The water is a milky-white sulfur spring, and part of the authentic experience is its distinctive, classic onsen aroma. There's nothing quite like soaking in the hot spring while enveloped by the forest trees. On clear nights, you might even be treated to a sky full of stars, which is sure to become a wonderful memory of your trip. It's the perfect way to relax both your mind and body.

Okunikko Yumoto Onsen Shiunsou

2541-1 Yumoto, Nikko-shi

  • A hidden gem of a hotel in Nikko Onsen

  • This hotel is a reasonably priced, hidden hot spring inn. There aren't many inns in Nikko Yumoto Onsen that cost less than 10,000 yen per night on the day before a holiday (you're looking for a reasonably priced inn, right?). It's a small, cozy Ryokan (Japanese inn), but the hot spring is free-flowing from the source, and the food and service are homey and friendly.

Hotel Casual Euro

1550-38 Tokorono

  • Each guest room has a hot spring on the terrace.

  • The room terrace is equipped with a bathtub that uses 100% natural hot spring water, so you can enjoy the hot springs as much as you like, whenever you like. The price is relatively cheap, and the dinner Buffet offers a wide variety of about 40 dishes, including crab, homemade roast beef, and the famous Yuba(soy milk skin)(bean paste) dish. The breakfast Buffet is also mainly Japanese and Western cuisine, and the variety and taste are both satisfying.

Ichiryukaku Honkan

Kawajionsen Takahara 46

  • There is a private open-air bath that can be enjoyed for free.

  • This hotel is a member of the Japan Association of Secret Hot Springs, so it's definitely worth a visit. There is a private open-air bath that you can enjoy for free. It's in the Oku-Kinu Onsen area, so it's quiet and relaxing. Another reason it's recommended is that the prices are relatively cheap. It takes about an hour and 20 minutes by train from Nikko Station, but it's a great hotel, so it's definitely worth considering. If you go by car in the winter, you'll need to use snow tires and bring tire chains as you'll be driving through mountain roads.

  • You can enjoy nature to the fullest.

  • My wife and I stayed here this autumn. The hot springs were great, and we enjoyed the food. It was a luxurious Buffet, and we were very satisfied. The price was reasonable, too. There are forests and woods around, so you can take a walk. It may be too cold to recommend now, but the beautiful nature remains. It will probably be cold, so it's a good idea to take proper cold weather precautions.

Nikko Toshogu Koyoen

  • The hotel is managed by Nikko Toshogu Shrine and the hot springs were great.

  • This hotel is directly managed by Nikko Toshogu Shrine. The grounds are spacious and not very flashy, but it is simple. The prices are reasonable, but the food was delicious. The Tochigi beef was delicious. The hot springs were also great, and since it was empty, we had it all to ourselves and could relax. You can spend your time here in peace and quiet.

Oku Nikko Mori no Hotel

2551 Yumoto, Nikko-shi

  • independent guest cottages from the hustle and bustle of the city.

  • It's in Nikko, so it takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes from Nikko Station. It's a little far to get to, but the luxury is worth it. Both the Japanese-style rooms and Japanese and Western room-Western style rooms have calming colors. I think you'll feel at home here. It's a hideaway location independent guest cottages from the hustle and bustle. At this time of year, the open-air baths are covered in snow, which creates a special atmosphere. The cuisine is carefully prepared to use local ingredients such as Nikko beef, so why not stay a night here?

Hotel Hananoki

2549-4 Yumoto, Nikko-shi

  • The entrance is full of beautiful flowers

  • As the hotel name suggests, flowers were blooming everywhere. I went there at the end of December, and the snowy scenery from the bath was quite nice, and the hot spring was very gentle and warm. It is convenient because it is close to the Yumoto bus stop. If you are driving a car, there is always snow in Nikko, so don't forget to bring chains and be careful not to slip.

Kyukamura Nikko-Yumoto

Yumoto Onsen

  • A lakeside inn with a high-quality hot spring

  • There is a World Heritage Site on the way to the hotel, and one of the attractions is being able to see various places from Lake Chuzenji to Senjogahara by climbing Irohazaka. The inn is built in a grove overlooking Lake Yunoko, and it is nice to stroll around the area. The rooms are calming, clean, and reasonably priced. There is a large public bath and an open-air bath. It is a high-quality, historic hot spring that draws water from the source of Nikko Yumoto Onsen, which opened in the Nara period.
