The best part is that all of them are gensen kakenagashi—meaning they are filled with 100% pure, free-flowing water straight from the source (no extra water added or recycled). The main public bath (daiyokujo) can get pretty crowded at peak times. But with a private bath, you get to have that amazing, high-quality water all to yourself in peace and quiet. It's also a great hotel for solo travelers, so you can feel completely comfortable staying there on your own.

  • This hotel is directly connected to Zao Onsen Ski Resort. I could see the slopes from my room. Rooms that can accommodate four people are Japanese-style rooms or special rooms. The large natural hot spring bath has an open-air bath with two tubs of different temperatures, and during the ski season you can enjoy bath to view the snow. Dinner is Japanese food. For the main dish, you can choose how you want to cook Yamagata beef: "Teppanyaki," "Sukiyaki," or "Shabu Shabu（Japanese hotpot）." Breakfast is Buffet. There are also dishes that are typical of Yamagata, such as ball konnyaku and omizuke. The Yamagata beef curry was delicious. There is free drink service in the morning and evening.

  • Since he is from America, I think he will be happy to be able to enjoy both Japanese and Western styles. When I stayed here before, he contacted me the day before and canceled, so I was able to stay in a room with a tatami bed, one level higher, for the same price. The hot springs, both indoor and outdoor, were excellent, with good water. For dinner, I enjoyed local sake (Otokoyama? Maybe not, but it's a good sake with a name similar to that) with Yamagata's specialty potato stew. Even though I don't like potatoes, I enjoyed it. I went in the summer, so it was cold, but in winter it might be good hot sake.
