  • Senomoto Kogen Hotel
  • Any recommendations for a great but affordable ryokan in Kurokawa Onsen, plus nearby things to see?

My husband and I are planning our first trip to Kurokawa Onsen for two nights this autumn as part of a tour of Kyushu. Could you recommend a ryokan that's perfect for a relaxing couple's getaway?

Senomoto Kogen Hotel

5644 Manganji

  • A Cozy and Affordable Hideaway in Kurokawa Onsen

  • This Kurokawa Onsen hotel prides itself on the spectacular scenery from its location 920 meters up on a highland plateau. The lobby itself offers a panoramic vista of the Senomoto Highlands and the five peaks of Mt. Aso. You can enjoy this magnificent view while soaking in the natural hot springs, whether from the incredibly spacious "Zekkei Hana no Yu" open-air bath overlooking the Aso grasslands, the glass-fronted "Senshin no Yu" observation bath, or one of the private baths. The culinary experience also connects you to the land, with kaiseki meals featuring ingredients sourced from Kumamoto and Aso.

  • An Inn Where You Can Experience the Authentic Charm of Kurokawa

  • This long-established inn, dating back to the late Edo period, lets you truly feel its history and savor the authentic atmosphere of Kurokawa Onsen. The grand public baths are as atmospheric as the inn itself, making for a wonderfully leisurely soak; the views from both the indoor and open-air baths are so stunning you'll never want to get out. The serene guest rooms with their beautiful views of the trees, the elegant seiro-mushi (basket-steamed) dishes of local meat and vegetables, and the attentive staff all come together to create a deeply historic and comfortable stay.

Ryokan Yumotosou

6700 Minamikogunimachi Manganji, Aso-Gun

  • Great Value for Money - Highly Recommended!

  • I highly recommend this inn for its reasonable price. The onsen facilities are fantastic: there are three types of private "family baths" that you can use 24 hours a day without a reservation, which is perfect for couples wanting to enjoy the Kurokawa waters in private. There are also public open-air and indoor baths. All guest rooms are located along the Tanoharu River, offering a tranquil view perfect for watching wild birds. The dinner is another highlight—a generous 14-course kaiseki meal featuring local organic ingredients like sashimi, grilled yamame trout, and even horse sashimi. It's also a great base for exploring the town with the "Nyūtō-tegata" onsen hopping pass.

  • A Charming Inn with a Delightfully Old-Fashioned Onsen

  • This long-established ryokan, founded 64 years ago, offers a truly authentic Japanese experience. The hallways and guest rooms are all traditional Japanese-style (washitsu), full of charming character. From my window, I could look out over the onsen town, which filled me with a wonderful sense of nostalgia. The onsen itself is located right beside a river, allowing for a long, relaxing soak while watching the water flow by. Strolling around the neighborhood in a yukata was also a wonderfully pleasant part of the stay.

Fumoto Ryokan

Manganji 6697

  • In terms of value for money, I think this is one of the best inns in Kurokawa.

  • If you're visiting Kurokawa Onsen, how about Fumoto Ryokan? Its most incredible feature is the sheer abundance of hot springs: 13 different types of baths across 15 different locations, all within the inn! The traditional open-air baths are especially atmospheric and wonderful. It's conveniently located in the center of the onsen town, perfect for sightseeing, and also offers free-to-use private baths ideal for couples. For around 20,000 yen per person with two meals included, and the option of a spacious 45㎡ room with its own private open-air bath, the value is fantastic.

  • A Traditional Japanese-Style Ryokan in Kurokawa Onsen

  • This traditional Japanese-style inn in Kurokawa Onsen is a perfect choice for a couple's private getaway. It features two beautiful open-air baths as well as private, reservable baths, allowing you to relax together undisturbed. You can also unwind in the stylish lounge, perfect for two. We recommend the mountain-side rooms for their lovely views of Kurokawa's nature. To complete the experience, the meals feature famous gourmet dishes from Kumamoto, such as baniku no tataki (seared horse meat).

Ryokan Sanga

6961-1 Manganji, Oguni-machi

  • Relax and Unwind, Perfectly Nestled in the Heart of the Fores

  • I think Ryokan Sanga is a great choice. It's a secluded hideaway nestled in a quiet forest, a short distance from the main onsen town. The onsen experience is deeply connected to nature; the women-only open-air bath is set right on the river, where you can relax to the sound of the babbling brook. You can enjoy seven different baths with two types of high-quality, free-flowing spring water. After relaxing, the dinner features seasonal dishes with local ingredients like Aso's Aka-ushi beef and Kumamoto's famous horse sashimi. With plans available for under 20,000 yen per person, it's a wonderfully reasonable choice for a peaceful escape.

  • We also had a wonderful time trying out all the different baths as a family.

  • This inn is located a little away from the bustling center of Kurokawa Onsen, making for a very relaxing and leisurely stay. The property grounds are expansive, and with several different baths on site, we had a great time doing a little 'bath tour' as a family. The meals were delicious, featuring generous portions and some unique, interesting dishes. Our room was also elegant and very comfortable. A perfect choice for a tranquil getaway.

It's nestled in a location surrounded by nature, yet it's only a 5-minute walk to the center of the onsen town. It's ideal whether you want a leisurely day in a natural setting or want to explore the lively streets. Ryokan Nanjoen

Manganji 6612-1

  • An Inn Featuring a 100% Pure, Unaltered, Free-Flowing Hot Spring

  • The best thing about Nanjoen is its high-quality onsen—it's 100% pure, free-flowing spring water with no added heat or water. Bathing while watching the sunset was just lovely. The staff here are incredibly kind and attentive, and the rooms are spacious and comfortable. We also loved the charming terrace with its irori (sunken hearth). On top of all that, it's in a convenient location for hopping around to the other onsen in town.

Ryokan Misato

  • An Affordable Inn for a Wonderful Kurokawa Onsen Experience

  • At this ryokan, you'll stay in a traditional 8-tatami mat Japanese-style room. For your meal, the "Misato Kaiseki" dinner is served in the privacy of your own room. The elegantly flavored dishes are prepared with fresh, local ingredients, and you can enjoy specialties like basashi (horse sashimi) and the inn's classic chawanmushi (savory egg custard). Be sure to also enjoy the "Misato no Yu" bath, a unique sulfur spring whose waters mysteriously change color throughout the day.
