  • Ginzan Onsen trip ("Oshin" setting). Best Ryokan recs for first-timers?

My friend (fan of the drama "Oshin") wants to visit its setting: Ginzan Onsen, Japan. Need recs for a famous ryokan or a popular hidden gem suitable for beginners. Must serve Washoku dinner.

Kosekiya Bekkan

417 Ginzan Shinhata, Obanazawa-shi

  • A retro wooden Japanese-style building worth staying in

  • Because it is a small inn, you can enjoy traditional Japanese architecture. First of all, choosing a room is fun. You can choose from the rooms on the river side where you can feel the four seasons, or the quiet and cozy mountain side, both of which have spacious layouts where you can relax and unwind. The highlight of the river side is the view of the gas lamps that are typical of Ginzan Onsen. The mountain side rooms have a different view, but I personally recommend the tranquility of these rooms, where the sound of the river is farther away. The toilets in the regular guest rooms are outside the room, so if this bothers you, consider upgrade. The renovated rooms on the top floor have an interior that seems to encapsulate Taisho-era romance even more, and the corridors leading up to them also have a nice atmosphere.

  • Ginzan Onsen is a hot spring inn filled with the romantic atmosphere of the Taisho era.

  • It is said that the reason Ginzan Onsen is so popular in Japan is the atmosphere of "Taisho Romanticism" that remains in its streets and architecture. In that respect, Kosekiya Bekkan is one of the lodgings we would recommend to those visiting Ginzan Onsen for the first time. Not only the exterior, but the interior is also retro in every way, making it very photogenic and sure to leave a lasting memory. This lodging has two indoor baths, but guests can also use the baths at the sister lodging, Ginzansou.

  • Ryokan (Japanese inn) makes you feel like you've traveled back in time

  • Ryokan (Japanese inn) treasures the atmosphere of Taisho-era romance and has kept its wooden structure intact. Therefore, footsteps and other sounds echo, but we recommend it to those who don't mind that. The food is a Japanese meal made with seasonal ingredients. The food is gently seasoned and warm. You can also enjoy Yamagata Kuroge Wagyu beef. All rooms are Japanese-style. The toilets are separate and shared, but there are many of them so you shouldn't have any problems. Free Wi-Fi is also available, and there is a shuttle service to the station (reservations are required).

  • A retro wooden Japanese-style Ryokan (Japanese inn)

  • This inn has a Taisho-era romantic feel and feels a bit old. It is registered as a tangible cultural property, so I would not recommend it to those who want a nice inn. Although it is old, it is clean and the food is delicious. You will be satisfied with the service, such as free drinks including alcohol during your stay. (Alcohol is available until 10pm) It is a wooden building, so please be careful as sounds from neighboring rooms can easily echo. The hot spring is small but clean, and you can enjoy the hot spring water 100% natural hot spring.

  • The open-air bath where you can enjoy the snowy scenery is the best

  • Many people may think of Ginzan Onsen as a place for snowy scenery, so I would like to introduce this inn that is recommended for winter. The open-air bath here is wonderful in any season, but I think it is especially Breathtaking view in winter. The scenery is surrounded by mountains, and in the cold season, snow piles up beautifully. The lights, which look like bamboo crafts, are placed around the bath, which gives it a very tasteful feel. If you don't like the cold, you can also view the mountains from the indoor bath. The food is a sophisticated kaiseki meal, which allows you to fully enjoy seasonal ingredients from Yamagata. If you don't have any allergies, I would also recommend trying the inn's proud handmade soba noodles.

  • Cuisine that allows you to fully enjoy the cuisine of Yamagata Prefecture, a treasure trove of ingredients.

  • Yamagata Prefecture is a region where you can enjoy the flavors, and there is a wide variety of delicacies such as soba noodles as well as fruits. (I like meat soba noodles) This inn is proud of its cuisine that focuses on such Yamagata ingredients. First of all, you should definitely try the authentic handmade soba noodles. Many regions focus on soba noodles, but Yamagata Prefecture is characterized by its noodles with a satisfying texture. Depending on the access method, there are always soba restaurants in train stations and airports in Japan, so it is recommended to try and compare them. Of course, wagyu beef is also a must. The breakfast is a Japanese set meal, so if you want to enjoy Japanese food to the fullest, this is the place to stay.

  • A hidden inn where you can eat delicious soba noodles

  • This is a hidden inn located on a hill in Ginzan Onsen. It is surrounded by mountains, so the view from the open-air bath is amazing! The food is delicious original cuisine that is unique to Yamagata, and you can also enjoy delicious soba noodles that are freshly ground, made, and boiled. You can see nature from the window, so you can feel the four seasons of Japan. I think it's Ryokan (Japanese inn) that you'll want to return to again and again in different seasons. The staff are also very polite.

  • An inn that boasts delicious cuisine

  • Many of the rooms have impressive large windows from which you can see the view of the Ginzan mountains. In winter, snow falls on the silver mine, making it very impressive. The kaiseki cuisine, which combines seasonal and traditional Yamagata ingredients, is very delicious. The breakfast is also packed with seasonal ingredients from Ginzan, so you're sure to be satisfied. There is a shuttle bus to the nearest Oishida Station, so it is easy to access.
