682 Yumoto, Hakone-machi, Ashigara-shimogun

  • The mystical garden and the open-air bath are the best

  • The location is within walking distance of Hakone Yumoto Station. It is a little independent guest cottages from the Hakone Open-Air Museum, but it is about 40 minutes by train or bus. This is Ryokan (Japanese inn) you can enjoy the great outdoors and hot springs of Hakone. We enjoyed the hot springs from our own source in the open-air bath in the sky and the various indoor baths. The open-air bath in particular was really spacious, and we felt close to the trees and could see the mountains and sky well, giving us a sense of openness and a sense of extraordinary. We also had a Japanese-style circular open-air bath and a Lying-down bath for lying down, where we could take a bath while looking at the night sky of Hakone. The vast garden was also very beautiful, and the shrine and the forest were integrated, creating a mysterious space. There was also a waterfall, and I felt like my body and mind were purified. There are various types of rooms, from standard twins to Japanese-style rooms and Japanese-style rooms with open-air baths.

  • A Must-See Mt. Fuji View from the Open-Air Bath!

  • I highly recommend Hotel Green Plaza Hakone. Their proudest feature is the breathtaking view of Mt. Fuji from their open-air bath, which is incredibly popular with international guests. Dinner is a buffet featuring Japanese, Western, and Chinese cuisine, so your friend can enjoy fresh sushi and seasonal tempura, or find plenty of options if they're not yet accustomed to Japanese food. The hotel is also ideally located just a three-minute walk from Ubako Station on the Hakone Ropeway, making it a great base for sightseeing.

  • Operated by a major hotel chain, Tokinoyu Setsugetsuka is a slightly more luxurious onsen ryokan. Every single room comes with its own private open-air bath, which is perfect for those who might be uncomfortable with public baths or who have tattoos, allowing them to enjoy the hot springs at their own pace in privacy. For dinner, guests can choose from Japanese-style main dishes like premium Wagyu shabu-shabu or sushi. The hotel also offers rentals of colorful and charming yukata (casual kimono), which international guests particularly enjoy. You'll find Japanese hospitality woven into every detail of their service.

  • Feel the homely hospitality

  • It is located on a hill on the shore of Lake Ashi. It is a wonderful Hakone Ryokan (Japanese inn) where you can feel the warm hospitality of the staff. We had meals in our room. The Kyoto-style kaiseki kaiseki(a traditional Japanese multiple course meal )was very carefully prepared, looked gorgeous, and tasted delicious. We were able to spend a relaxing time with a view of Mt. Fuji. The free private bath was spacious and relaxing.

80 Moto-Hakone, Hakone-machi, Ashigara-shimo-gun

  • A long-established resort hotel located in one of the best locations on the shores of Lake Ashi in Hakone

  • From the Tokyo metropolitan area, you can go directly to the hotel in about 150 minutes from Shinjuku on the Odakyu Highway Bus. If you are traveling by train, it is about a 25-minute drive from Hakone-Yumoto Station. This is a long-established resort hotel located in one of the best locations on the shores of Lake Ashi in Hakone. You can see Lake Ashi and Mt. Fuji from the hotel, and you can enjoy Lake Ashi hot springs from the hotel's own source in the large communal bath and open-air bath. You can choose between Western and Japanese food for meals, and I chose Japanese food for dinner and Western food for breakfast, but dinner had a seasonal feel and was delicious and beautiful to look at.

  • There is ample English support, including a picture story show in English and the "Kakeyu Dance" lesson in English.

  • At Tenyu Hotel, a hot spring sommelier holds a "hot spring lecture" every day, teaching overseas guests in English how to bathe in a hot spring and proper etiquette. This is only available to guests staying at the hotel, so why not stay the night and participate? All rooms at Tenyu Hotel have their own open-air hot spring baths, and there is also a large public bath, so you can fully enjoy the hot springs just within the hotel, but there is also Yunessun nearby, so once you get used to the hot springs, why not spend the whole day at Yunessun soaking in the hot springs until your body is soaking up the heat?

  • Enjoy Beautiful Skin Hot Springs in Scenic Private Baths

  • How about Ryokan Aura Tachibana? This ryokan has an abundant supply of hot spring water with skin-beautifying effects flowing throughout the building. Not only can you enjoy the large public baths (which include an open-air bath and a sauna!), but there are also private open-air baths with incredible views that you can reserve. If you stay in a room with a private open-air bath, you can enjoy a relaxing soak anytime you like! The rooms are traditional Japanese-style with tatami mats, but if you're not a fan of sleeping on a futon, they also have rooms with two single beds. There's a free shuttle bus from the nearest Hakone-Yumoto Station, but it's also a pleasant 15-minute walk. I recommend strolling through the shopping street in front of the station and enjoying the atmosphere of the onsen town surrounded by nature as you make your way to the ryokan.

  • Onsen Ryokan Just a 2-Minute Walk from Hakone-Yumoto Station!

  • Hakone Suimeisou Hotel is incredibly close to Hakone-Yumoto Station, just a two-minute walk, yet it faces the Hayakawa River, offering a peaceful retreat away from the bustle of Hakone. Agoda's website indicates they offer English support, making it an excellent base for exploring the shopping street, shopping, and sightseeing due to its proximity to the station. The hotel features large public baths with scenic views, and they also have private reservable open-air baths, which is great for those who might be hesitant about public bathing. If your friend ends up traveling alone for part of the trip, they even have cost-effective single-occupancy rooms in a separate annex (room-only basis). While meals aren't included with these, there are plenty of restaurants near the station and a convenience store nearby. Right next door is "Naoyoshi," a famous restaurant specializing in "Yuba-don" (a dish with fresh tofu skin) made from freshly drawn yuba – a must-try Japanese delicacy!
