And of course, the spacious rotenburo (open-air bath) is magnificent. For a first visit to Kurokawa Onsen, and if you are planning a somewhat special, upscale family trip, I believe this is the perfect choice.

Here you can fully enjoy the sand bath, a specialty of Ibusuki Onsen. There is also a bathhouse that recreates a large bathhouse from the Edo and Genroku periods in Japan. The bathhouse is as large as a pool, so you can enjoy bathing in a spacious space.

Ibusuki Royal Hotel does not have a sand bath on site, but they provide a free shuttle bus to a place where sand baths are available, so it wasn't a problem. The large public bath and open-air bath in the hotel had good quality water and a nice view. We also enjoyed the delicious shochu and Satsuma Kuroge Wagyu steak, as well as other dishes made with local ingredients.

If you are in Kagoshima, be sure to try the sand bath at Ibusuki Onsen. This is a traditional Japanese Ryokan (Japanese inn) offers a sand bath with a foot bath. There is a large bath, an open-air bath, and two private hot springs. The food is also famous for the black pork shabu-shabu kaiseki course meal, and as the sea is nearby, you can enjoy kaiseki（a traditional Japanese multiple course meal ）using delicious seafood. I went to Yakushima 10 years ago. It is the largest hotel in Yakushima and has a 33,000m2 garden. When you enter the hotel, you are greeted by a huge Yakusugi tree that reaches up to the second floor. I don't know if it's still there, but when I went to Yakusugi Land by bus, I was surprised that the guests of Iwasaki Hotel were allowed to board even when it wasn't a bus stop, and when we came across a deer in the mountains on the way, the bus stopped and we had time to take photos. It was a wonderful trip.

Fumoto Ryokan is an inn I can confidently recommend to both onsen enthusiasts and those who appreciate fine cuisine. Regarding the basashi (horse sashimi) you requested, you have options: you can either select a plan that already includes it, or you can order it as an additional dish. The cuisine here is strongly committed to local flavors, featuring specialties like Akaushi (red) beef. Furthermore, all the hot springs are gensen kakenagashi. This means they are 100% free-flowing, with water piped directly from the source—never recycled. A significant highlight is the 11 kashikiri (private-use) baths, which are free for guests. This is ideal for families. Many of these baths are full of character, allowing you to fully savor the authentic Kurokawa Onsen experience.

I've been there a few times, both for driving from Fukuoka and for day trips. (It's a luxury hotel, so it's hard to stay there!) The open-air bath is very spacious, and the mountains spread out in front of you, Breathtaking view! After the bath, I recommend the traditional pudding at Cafe BanBan. It's a firm pudding that you could eat in cafes during the Showa era, and I go there just for that. The interior is Japanese-style, with a warm wooden feel. The meals use seasonal Japanese ingredients, so I think parents will be happy too.

Ibusuki Iwasaki Hotel is a great place to enjoy the hot springs and the ocean view. There is also a sand bath inside the hotel, and after the sand bath, it feels great to take a bath in the open-air bath overlooking the ocean. It's especially good to take a bath while watching the sunrise. The food is also pretty good, so it's a hotel the whole family can enjoy.

This long-established inn, dating back to the late Edo period, lets you truly feel its history and savor the authentic atmosphere of Kurokawa Onsen. The grand public baths are as atmospheric as the inn itself, making for a wonderfully leisurely soak; the views from both the indoor and open-air baths are so stunning you'll never want to get out. The serene guest rooms with their beautiful views of the trees, the elegant seiro-mushi (basket-steamed) dishes of local meat and vegetables, and the attentive staff all come together to create a deeply historic and comfortable stay.

All five baths in the inn can be reserved for private use, allowing you to fully enjoy the natural onsen(hot spring) directly from the source in a private space. The dinner menu, which includes steak, Shabu Shabu（Japanese hotpot）, and sukiyaki made with local Bungo beef, as well as an abundance of local seasonal ingredients, is also excellent.

Unfortunately, there are no accommodations that offer free shuttle buses to Kagoshima Chuo Station. To get to Ibusuki Station and Kagoshima Chuo Station, please take the local train. At Kyuka Mura, not only can you enjoy the free-flowing Ibusuki hot spring water from the large indoor bath and the open-air bath with a view of Kinko Bay up close, but you can also enjoy a sand bath (990 yen per use). There is also a private semi-open-air bath. For dinner, you can choose your main dish and then enjoy a half-buffet style meal, so you can eat lots of local cuisine. For breakfast, there is a buffet with sweets and fruit, which gets you excited starting off with a healthy tropical breakfast.

After sightseeing at Kumamoto Castle, we recommend Shogen Sanso in Tamana onsen(hot spring). Kurokawa onsen(hot spring) is also famous, but it's a little far from Kumamoto Castle. Tamana onsen(hot spring) is easily accessible, about 50 minutes by car, so driving is less of a hassle. They offer a day trip plan that includes lunch. For a budget of 20,000 yen per person, you can enjoy a slightly luxurious lunch, similar to kaiseki cuisine. onsen(hot spring) has thick, viscous water known as "Bijin-no-yu (a hot spring of beauty)," which is sure to please your girlfriend.

It is a little outside the central area of Kurokawa Onsen, but if you are looking for value for money, it is worth staying at. Check-in time is a little early, so it is recommended if you are planning a relaxing trip at the inn.
